A histological study on the development of the digestive system of Pseudosciaena crocea larvae and juveniles ArchiMer
Mai, Kangsen; Yu, Hairui; Ma, Hongming; Duan, Qingyuan; Gisbert, Enric; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal.
The ontogenetic development of the gut and accessory organs in large yellow croaker Pseudosciaena crocea was investigated using light microscopy from hatching up to the juvenile stage (40 days post hatch, dph). At 3 dph (mean +/- S.D., 4.1 +/- 0.1 mm total length, L-T), coinciding with the buccopharynx opening, larvae started to feed exogenously, and the gut consisted of a well-developed buccopharynx, a partially-differentiated oesophagus and an intestine divided in three regions (anterior intestine, intermediate intestine and rectum). Yolk reserves were not completely depleted at the onset of exogenous feeding, and a period of mixed nutrition was observed up to 6 dph (4.3 +/- 0.1 mm L-T) when yolk was definitively exhausted. Important morphological...

Adaptive features of a bacteriolytic enzyme from the style of the mussel Choromytilus meridionalis in response to environmental fluctuations. ArchiMer
Seiderer, L; Robb, F.
The extracellular digestive apparatus of bivalve molluscs consists of a crystalline style containing diverse degradative enzymes which are released during rotation and dissolution of the style. This paper reviews the occurrence of a temperature-regulated bacteriolytic enzyme in the black mussel Choromytilus meridionalis , which is an inhabitant of coastal reefs on the south and south west coast of South Africa. This agent is unable to lyse Micrococcus luteus or Escherichia coli , both of which are susceptible to lysis by a true lysozyme. It appears to have a restricted spectrum of activity which includes both free-living and kelp-associated gram-negative bacteria. In addition, the level of activity varies dramatically according to the environmental water...

Adult carbohydrate feeding affects reproduction of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) Neotropical Entomology
Jordão,Alexandre L; Nakano,Octávio; Janeiro,Vanderly.
Reproduction of most insects depend on nutrients accumulated during the larval stage, but many lepidopteran species will also depend on nutrients obtained at the adult stage. Feeding at the adult stage allows the intake of carbohydrate and amino acid rich solutions, which may have an effect on the species reproduction and population growth. The objectives of the current study were to characterize the effects of sugar consumption by adults of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), on its reproduction. To initially test the food intake by adults, a 10% honey solution or water (control), both containing a liquid dye were offered to adult insects 24h after emergence, and the presence of the dye was observed by analysis of their digestive...

An oral challenge for turbot larvae with <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i> OMA
Chair, M.; Dehasque, M.; Van Poucke, S.; Nelis, H.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
There is a need for a standard in vitro procedure to infect larval fish with bacteria. Such a procedure could be used as a tool to evaluate fish quality, verify fish sensitivity to a certain bacterial strain or evaluate the pathogenicity of a bacterium towards a given fish species. The availability of a challenge test is a prerequisite in studies dealing with the effect of different medicinal treatments on diseased fish. An oral challenge test would offer the possibility to investigate the routes of infection via the digestive tract, i.e. after feeding contaminated feeds. The present study aims to verify this hypothesis and proposes a standard challenge procedure for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i>) larvae with a pathogenic <i>Vibrio...

Appearance and Digestive System Comparison of Lonchura Striata and Copsychus Saularis: Searching for the Effect of Staple Feeding Ingredients on Avian Morphology Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Huang,R; Li,L; Song,B; Lyu,Y; Wu,B.
ABSTRACT This study explores the differences of appearance and the digestive systems of two birds (Lonchura striata and Copsychus saularis), which have the same eating pattern in staple ingredients. Each bird was caught naturally and euthanized in appropriate manner, followed by morphology survey on bill, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and appearance of the body parts such as Culmen, Claw, Wing, Tarsus, Toe and Tail. The results showed that the appearance feature between them presented significant differences in the beak length, wing length and tail length, which were correlated to their staple feeding habits. In addition, in the digestive system, the length of duodenum and duodenal indexes showed significant differences (p<0.05 or p<0.01), which was...

Broiler adaptation to post-hatching period Ciência Rural
Maiorka,Alex; Dahlke,Fabiano; Morgulis,Maria Silvia Furquim de Azevedo.
In the latest years more attention has been given to mechanisms for bird adaptation at post-hatching period by management of environmental conditions and formulations of diets offered during this period when digestive, immune, and thermo-regulating systems suffer slight changes. In post-hatching period, digestive system is anatomically complete, but its functionality is still immature in relation to adult birds. The chick immunity depends on maternal antibodies transferred to egg just before laying. In addition, variations within thermal comfort zone might affect initial development of chick. For example, high temperatures may induce hyperthermia with dehydration, while low temperatures may lead to hypothermia responsible by pulmonary hypertension...

Descripción morfológica e histológica del aparato digestivo del calamar Illex argentinus (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae) OceanDocs
Ivanovic, M.L.; Brunetti, N.E..
The morphology and histology of the digestive tract of the Argentine short-finned squid Illex argentinus are described. The structures involved are the buccal mass, oesophagus, vestibulum, stomach, caecum, intestine, digestive gland and digestive duct appendages. A differential development of the tissular components in relation to the function of each organ is observed. The musculature of the buccal mass, oesophagus and stomach, organs involved in the mechanical degradation of food is strongly developed. This development is weaker in the caecum where enzymatic digestion and absorption take place and in the intestine. For the same reason, the epithelia of the mucosae of the oesophagus and stomach secrete a thick cuticle whereas those of the caecum and...

Description of the unusual digestive tract of Platax orbicularis and the potential impact of Tenacibaculum maritimum infection ArchiMer
Alix, Maud; Gasset, Eric; Bardon-albaret, Agnes; Noel, Jean; Pirot, Nelly; Perez, Valérie; Coves, Denis; Saulnier, Denis; Lignot, Jehan-hervé; Cucchi, Patricia N..
Background Ephippidae fish are characterized by a discoid shape with a very small visceral cavity. Among them Platax orbicularis has a high economic potential due to its flesh quality and flesh to carcass ratio. Nonetheless, the development of its aquaculture is limited by high mortality rates, especially due to Tenacibaculum maritimum infection, occurring one to three weeks after the transfer of fishes from bio-secure land-based aquaculture system to the lagoon cages for growth. Among the lines of defense against this microbial infection, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is less studied. The knowledge about the morphofunctional anatomy of this organ in P. orbicularis is still scarce. Therefore, the aims of this study are to characterize the GIT in...

Development and functional morphology of the larval foregut of two brachyuran species from Northern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Monteiro,Joely R.C.; Souza Junior,Antonio N. de; Oliva,Pedro A.C..
Feeding is an important factor for the successful rearing of larvae of the crab species. Further information on the morphological features of the foregut may to reveal larval feeding behaviour and or/whether there is a lecithotrophy in some or even in all stages of the larval cycle. In the present study, the structural development of the foregut and their digestive functions were examined in larvae of two brachyurans, Uca vocator and Panopeus occidentalis, reared in the laboratory. During larval development, the foreguts of the larvae in the first and last zoeal stages and in the megalopa stage were microscopically examined, described and illustrated. The zoeal foreguts of both species were well developed, showing specialization with a functional...

Developpement embryonnaire de Palaemon serratus : Resultats preliminaires ArchiMer
Bellon, H.
The formation of the limbs, the digestive tract, the nervous system, the sensory and hormonal structures begins in this prawn during the embryonic stage C, according to Richard's definition (1974) and is performed at the stage H. The digestive tract differentiates with a caudo-cephalic gradient. The digestive gland is formed at least partially by vitellophages. The C.N.S. appears with a cephalo-caudal gradient and the regions of the eyestalk are quickly differentiated. The organ of Bellonci and the sensory pore appear independently during the stage F. The first neurosecretory cells are detected in the brain during the stage D.

Dietary phospholipids are more efficient than neutral lipids for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supply in European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax larval development ArchiMer
Gisbert, Enric; Villeneuve, Laure; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Quazuguel, Patrick; Cahu, Chantal.
We evaluated the effects of dietary lipid class (phospholipid vs. neutral lipid) and level of n-3 long-chain PUFA (LC-PUFA) on the growth, digestive enzymatic activity, and histological organization of the intestine and liver in European sea bass larvae. Fish were fed from the onset of exogenous feeding at 7 to 37 d post-hatch with five isoproteic and isolipidic compound diets with different levels of EPA and DHA. Diet names indicated the percentage of EPA and DHA contained in the phospholipids (PL) and neutral lipids (NL), as follows: PL5, PL3, PL1, NL1, and NL3. Histological observations showed different patterns of lipid absorption and accumulation in the intestinal mucosa depending on the level and nature of the dietary lipid fraction. Fish fed high...

Dietary vitamin D-3 affects digestive system ontogenesis and ossification in European sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax, Linnaeus, 1758) ArchiMer
Darias, Maria J.; Mazurais, David; Koumoundouros, Giorgos; Glynatsi, Nomiki; Christodoulopoulou, Stavroula; Huelvan, Christine; Desbruyeres, Elisabeth; Le Gall, Marie-madeleine; Quazuguel, Patrick; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino-infante, Jose L..
The influence of dietary vitamin D-3 (VD3) on survival, growth and morphogenesis during the larval development of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was evaluated until 45 days post hatching. Diets contained 4% of the standard vitamin mix (VM) recommended by the National Research Council (NRC) and incorporated 0, 19.2, 38.4, or 140 IU of VD3 per gram of diet to give VD-0, VD-1, VD-2 and VD-3 dietary treatments, respectively. The present study revealed for the first time an impact of dietary VD3 on the sea bass digestive system ontogenesis that consequently conditioned the ossification process and morphogenesis. All dietary VD3 levels were in the "adequate range" based on larval survival. Nevertheless, growth, intestinal maturation and ossification at...

Digestive and regenerative cells in the midgut of haploid and diploid males of the stingless bee Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Fernandes,Kenner M.; Martins,Gustavo F.; Serrão,José E.; Neves,Clóvis A..
In eusocial bees, workers and queens are diploid (2n), whereas males are haploid (n). However, in some species, including the stingless bee Melipona quadrifasciata anthidioides Lepeletier, 1836, 2n males arise from fertilized eggs resulting from the crossing between a queen and her brother. In the present study, we provide a comparative analysis of the digestive and regenerative cells in n and 2n pupae and adult males of M. quadrifasciata anthidioides. In n and 2n pupae and adult males, the number of regenerative cells/nest was similar. In n and 2n pupae, the mean number of digestive cells/midgut area was 2076 ± 0.60, whereas in adults it was 1234 ± 1.42 digestive cells/midgut area. The nuclear area of the digestive cells was also similar in both n and 2n...

Does the Ingestion of Isoxaflutole Herbicide Affect the Midgut and Salivary Glands of Pentatomidae Predators? Planta Daninha
GONÇALVES,T.S.; SOARES,M.A.; SANTOS,C.A.; SANTOS,D.A.; SANTOS,J.B.; BARROSO,G.A..
Podisus nigrispinus is a generalist predator naturally occurring in agricultural and forestry systems that effectively contributes to the population balance of phytophagous insects, especially defoliating caterpillars. Histological changes were evaluated in the salivary glands and midgut of P. nigrispinus caused by ingestion of systemic herbicide isoxaflutole. These predator females were fed with leaves of eucalyptus plants, Tenebrio molitor pupae or water, contaminated or not by herbicide. Salivary glands and midguts were dissected, processed and analyzed under a light microscope. Activity level and cell morphology of the salivary glands and midgut showed differences among insects fed on plants, contaminated water or pupae. The epithelia of the salivary...

Dynamique et enzymologie de la digestion chez l'huitre Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Boucaud, C; Lebesnerais, C; Lubet, P; Lihrmann, I.
Feeding experiments carried out on Crassostrea gigas allowed the authors to set up the stages and the timing of the movement of food throughout the digestive tract. Various activities involved in digestion (glycosidases, esterases, and peptidases) were investigated histochemically in the digestive tract in order to localize the sites of absorption and the sites of protein and carbohydrate digestion. An explicative model of the different stages of digestion is proposed.

Early weaning of marine fish larvae onto microdiets: Constraints and perspectives ArchiMer
Person, L.
Weaning small sized marine fish larvae at first feeding directly onto compound pellets is still difficult, while good results can be obtained when used in combination with live prey or when a prefeeding period on live prey is provided up to a size of about 2-3 mg. Microdiets are generally well ingested as their acceptability and visual detection may be improved using feeding activators and increasing good perception contrast. In theory, food may be processed to have a correct nutritional balance, selection of high digestible components is very important as larval digestive system is not fully functional during the first 2 or 3 weeks of life.
